Myles Humpries regards himself as just an ordinary man who has taken on a divine mission--protecting the children of his community by taking the lives of men who prey on them sexually. With the help of chat rooms and prepaid cell phones, he deceives the predators who seek to rendezvous with underage children.
While carrying out his mission, two detectives are thrown together to solve the case--quickly. Kenny Cosco is a young gun with an outstanding track record. Leonard Royal is an aging close to washout with no desire to take on a high-profile case. Together they find middle ground on their assignment to apprehend the man who calls himself the "defender of children."
Myles' calling forces him to hurt those he would rather not hurt and push himself through mental and physical anguish until a horrific incident pushes him into seclusion and leaves the detectives with little to go on.
However, an aggressive young reporter picks up the story and writes a few articles that flatter Myles. He perceives them to be an undeniable sign of his need to get back on track and decides to do one more mission--on a grand scale.
Defender of Children absorbs the reader with its suspense and believable characters while its appeal to human nature creates empathy for both sides of the law.
